Summary of the UNAVETS and OneVet Training Sessions (Spain and Portugal) – December 2024 & January 2025

UNAVETS and OneVet remain committed to providing high-quality veterinary training through their educational platform, OneAcademy. During December 2024 and January 2025, both groups organized specialized training sessions in various fields of veterinary medicine. Below is a summary of the training events held in both regions, focusing on feline medicine, traumatology, soft tissue surgery, and critical patient management.

UNAVETS Training in Spain

 

Training Session – Intensive Care Unit

On December 12, 2024, at Veterios Veterinary Referral Hospital (Madrid), Beatriz Alcocer, a veterinarian specialized in ICU and Emergency Medicine, led a session focused on ureteral obstruction in feline patients. The session covered key aspects of diagnosing and treating this condition, with an emphasis on the most advanced management techniques. The event concluded with a networking session and catering for attendees.

Training Session on Feline Medicine

On December 19, 2024, at Gasteiz Veterinary Hospital (Vitoria), Salvador Cervantes, an internationally recognized feline medicine specialist, delivered comprehensive training on the diagnosis and treatment of coughing and respiratory distress in cats. The session emphasized the importance of structured diagnostics and thorough follow-ups to ensure effective treatment.

Training Session on Traumatology

On January 15, 2025, Felipe de Vicente, an EBVS Specialist (European Diplomate ECVS) and Clinical Director at Veterios Referral Hospital, conducted a training session on traumatology at his hospital. The session covered various advanced techniques for treating fractures and joint injuries in small animals, including the use of external fixators and modern orthopedic implants. The training combined theoretical knowledge with hands-on workshops to ensure immediate application of acquired skills.

Training Session on Hip Dysplasia

On January 30, 2025, at Veterios Referral Hospital, Felipe de Vicente delivered a detailed training session on treating hip dysplasia in dogs. He outlined available treatment options, including conservative management with weight reduction, anti-inflammatory medications, omega-3 supplements, and rehabilitation. He also discussed surgical options, highlighting hip replacement as the most successful treatment, eliminating the need for lifelong medication in affected animals.

Soft Tissue Surgery Training – North

On December 6-7, 2024, OneVet Hospital Veterinário Universitário de Paredes, in northern Portugal, hosted a training session on soft tissue surgery. Veterinary specialists André Queirós and Luís Maltez explained the principles of soft tissue surgery, emphasizing procedures related to the digestive, hepatic, splenic, and urinary systems. The session also covered surgical techniques for the respiratory system, oral cavity, and skin, including flap procedures and hernia repair.

Dermatology Training

On December 14-15, 2024, at Hospital Veterinário do Porto, a dermatology training session was held. Veterinary specialists Diana Ferreira, Helena Guimarães, Maria Inês, and Sara Salgueiro provided practical modules on diagnosing and treating external otitis, cytology, and advanced techniques such as video-otoscopy. Additionally, a hands-on workshop on dermatological cytology was conducted, allowing participants to apply their knowledge to real cases.

Soft Tissue Surgery Training – Center/South

On December 20-21, 2024, the soft tissue surgery training session was repeated at Hospital Veterinário Tapada das Mercês (Center/South). As in the northern session, veterinary specialists André Queirós and Pedro Olivério covered a wide range of surgical techniques, including procedures involving the digestive, respiratory, urinary, and reproductive systems, as well as the skin. The session also addressed hernia repair and cleft palate reconstruction.

UNAVETS and OneVet continue to advance veterinary specialization through theoretical and practical training in high-demand areas. These training sessions, held at veterinary hospitals in Spain and Portugal, focus on feline medicine, traumatology, soft tissue surgery, and dermatology, reinforcing their essential role in keeping veterinary medicine up to date. Continuous education remains crucial for providing excellent patient care and fostering sustained growth within the veterinary sector.
